OBTAINING MAXIMUM RETURN ON YOUR HPA INVESTMENT THROUGH EFFECTIVE PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

MCL high power amplifiers are built to withstand the ordeals of all sorts of operational environments. However, a bit of care and forethought regarding their routine maintenance can go a long way toward assuring the longest possible operational life... with the lowest possible downtime. What is presented here may seem like "common sense", but if these practices are followed, you will eliminate common problems that result in service interruptions.

Dust and Dirt

The first step in this procedure is to always shut off all power at the system circuit breaker prior to cleaning. MCL HPAs should be inspected on a three month basis for dust and dirt accumulation. This is especially important in any areas operating at high voltages. During the inspection process, all evidence of dust and dirt should be removed.

Moisture

When the system has been shut off for any length of time, it is possible for moisture accumulation and/or water build up to occur within the cabinet. It is extremely important, should this occur, that you follow the specific instructions for your amplifier relative to procedures after a lengthy shutdown. There are specific parameters regarding "cold shutdown" modes that apply to each MCL high power amplifier which are provided in the operation manual.

Cabinet Cleaning

The first step in this procedure is to always shut off all power at the system circuit breaker prior to cleaning. The external surfaces are coated with a baked-on enamel or powder-coated finish to protect them against day-to-day abuse, and this coating will also protect the cabinet from mild cleaning solutions. Always use a mild soapy water solution, or a diluted alcohol solution on a damp cloth to clean the panel. Always avoid using an excessive amount of cleaning solution, as this could migrate into unwanted areas and cause operational problems.

Interior Cleaning

After extended periods of use, there is a possibility of accumulation of airborne residue within the HPA cabinet. If this is the case, first shut off the power, and make sure the exterior cabinet is clean (see above) before opening the amplifier cover and/or door. To clean the interior, use a stream of compressed air to clean both the RF and Power Supply modules to dislodge any residue. Then, return the amplifier to the closed configuration and restore the power.

Panel Lamps

On all MCL high power amplifiers, the panel incorporates LED lamps that should never need replacement during the entire service life of the amplifier. However, in the event of an LED failure, they are easily replaceable by first removing all power from the unit, then removing the front panel. The LED can then be unsoldered, replaced (be careful to observe correct LED polarity), and the panel reinstalled.

Blower and Fans

All MCL HPAs incorporate blowers and fans that feature permanently lubricated bearings that should never require oiling or greasing. It is appropriate, however, to inspect the blowers and fans at both intake and exhaust every six months for any potential obstructions or build-up. If any is found, it can be safely removed by using compressed air to free the blowers and fans of any dirt accumulation.

Switched Interlocks

All switches, interlocks, and mechanical relays should be inspected on a six month basis for operational integrity. Obvious failures will be apparent from the normal day-to-day operations. However, these functional parts should be tested regularly for electrical function. Testing can consist of simply opening a drawer to activate an interlock switch in question to test its function.

Your Ongoing Satisfaction is a Priority at MCL

Our goal at MCL is to assure your continued satisfaction in our high power amplifiers. Service tips, ongoing maintenance advice, and operational training is essential to this process.
